Landmark Missoula eatery shutting down

KPAX TV photo(MISSOULA)- No more burgers, shakes or famous Philly sandwiches as Del's Place Diner announces it will close in a week.

KPAX TV reports the owners decided the business just wasn't working anymore after 26-years of operation downtown.

Owner Del Hewlett says they kept hoping for the economy to turn around, but he says this summer has been the slowest of the last three or four years, a tough development when summer is the diner's best season. Hewlett says he had to "bite the bullet" and decide to close.

Hewlett says business has been slow the past five years, and the new restaurants and fast food businesses on North Reserve have made for tough competition.

The diner will close on July 20th.

An outdoor store returns to Trempers Shopping Center

(MISSOULA)- People who miss browsing for outdoor gear while visiting a landmark Missoula shopping center will be happy to know a new retailer is about to open.

Trempers Shopping Center, which has been without an outdoor retailer since High Country Sports closed last year, is announcing that Outdoor Supply & Rental will be opening in a couple of weeks.

Outdoor Supply & Rental will be owned and operated by Tobey and Kelly McGuirl, who has a long history in local sporting goods stories in the Missoula area. The new shop will open in the space that used to be filled by High Country between the newly-expanded Ace Hardware and the recently-remodeled Albertson’s.

The McGuirls will focus on providing quality outdoor sporting goods at discount prices, as well as providing high quality rental equipment including cross country skis, other snow equipment, rafts, float tubes and camping equipment.

Owner Glenn Tremper says the family is excited to bring a sporting goods store back to the Center.

Last year, Terry Brady retired and closed Sportsman’s Surplus and High Country Sports.  Montana Ace Hardware, owned and operated by Stu and Meg Weiss, occupied the space formerly held by Sportsman’s Surplus and have completed an impressive update of their entire hardware store. Tremper says with the addition of Outdoor Supply & Rental, the entire center one more leased and occupied.

Trempers currently is home to Book Exchange, Liquid Planet, Paul’s Pancake Parlor, Ace Hardware, and Albertsons.  The Center has seen substantial updating and improvement since 2007, including a renovation of the rear of the center along Russell Street, completed last year.
