Temperatures to plunge overnight

Buds like these could freeze the next couple of nights(MISSOULA)- National Weather Service forecasters are expecting temperatures across Western Montana to plunge the next two nights, as a spring cold snap tightens its grip on the Northern Rockies.

NWS has issued a Freeze Warning for the valleys of Northwest and West Central Montana through Wednesday morning, expecting temps to plunge to record, or near-record lows Tuesday morning and again Wednesday morning. Forecasters say in some cases, lows could drop into the upper teens.

NWS says the big problem is that nights are still fairly long this time of the year, meaning sub-freezing temperatures could persist for as long as 10-hours. That means young plants and budding trees could see severe damage from the cold.

Temperatures are expected to range from 18-to-24 degrees in the Missoula, Bitterroot, Mission, Flathead, and Lower Clark Fork Valleys as well as the Kootenai region of Northwest Montana.
