Cold catches hunters off guard with two fortunate rescues

(MISSOULA)- A hunter who was stranded in the mountains near Clinton Sunday night with no supplies was fortunate to escape uninjured after spending a night out in the cold.

Missoula County Sheriff's deputies say the hunter got stranded on Wallace Creek without adequate gear, but managed to build a warming fire overnight. He was then able to walk out to a nearby home where he got a ride to the search and rescue camp on Monday morning.

And in Southwest Montana, a man and his 5-year old daughter were found by searchers after their truck got stuck in a drift at over 7-thousand feet in elevation on Burnt Willow Creek. Authorities say the man was out hunting but had no food, water or chains for his truck when he got stranded. They were found after an extensive ground and air search.

Stuck hunters freed from South Fork mud

(HUNGRY HORSE)- Two bear hunters had to spend a cold night out in the woods after their truck got stuck in the mud on the upper reaches of the South Fork of the Flathead.

The Daily Interlake reports the pair were hunting on one of the bays along the Hungry Horse Reservoir when their truck became mired in the mud that's common along the lake shore, especially in the spring and fall when lake levels are lower.

The brothers had been expected back home Tuesday evening, so North Valley Search and Rescue teams went looking for them at first light Wednesday, locating them a couple of hours later. The Flathead County Sheriff's Department also helped in the search, and was ready to start looking from the air when the pair were located.
